The Fodor's Five

The five things you need to know before traveling to Corfu

# 1

Corfu has an eclectic history–and you’ll need a car to explore this.

A jewel in the Ionian Sea off of Greece’s West Coast, Corfu’s tapestry of influences expands across cultures and empires, and is reflected through its Byzantine, Venetian, French, and British architecture and daily life. Must-visit sites include the Achilleion Palace, dedicated to Achilles and built for Empress Elisabeth of Austria; and the 13th-century Paleokastritsa Monastery, which looks down upon a beach of the same name with hidden sea caves just waiting to be explored. For an alternative swim, the Canal d’Amour—the “canal of love”—in the northwest of the island is so named because local legend maintains that couples who can swim the entire length of the narrow inlet will stay in love forever.  Although buses on the island are good, you’ll have an easier time getting around in a rental.

# 2

Corfu’s beaches offer something for every traveler.

Corfu’s beaches, spectacularly beautiful and diverse, are not to be missed. As one of Greece’s greenest islands, with a coastline offering everything from secluded coves to lively shores, Corfu’s beaches have something for everyone. If you’re looking for an active beach experience, Glyfada, just a 15-minute drive from Corfu Town, is known for its golden sands stretching for a mile at the base of a pine-clad mountain. This is the place to come for active beach time with its two beach volleyball courts, beach soccer, water sports, changing lockers, and showers, plus beach bars with live DJ sets. By contrast, for complete tranquility, a half-hour drive inland from Corfu Town on the island’s west coast lies sandy Myrtiotissa Beach, an unofficial nude beach. It’s a little tricky getting here, but well worth the effort.

# 3

The best place to stay is Corfu Old Town.

Corfu Old Town provides easy access to many of the island’s main sights and beaches, making it the perfect base to explore the island. The island's vibrant blend of history and culture is reflected through the architectural style and hidden streets of its UNESCO culturally designated Old Town. Here you can immerse yourself in the charming kandounia (narrow cobbled alleys) with their boutique shops selling local crafts and souvenirs while marveling at the Venetian-style architecture. Visit the 16th-century Old Fortress for panoramic sea views and the historic St. Spyridon Church, home to Corfu's patron saint. Stroll along the 19th-century Liston Promenade, lined with cafés set under the ancient arches, and then browse the Archaeological Museum for insights into Corfu's rich past. There are a number of cute accommodation options to choose from here: boutique hotels, family-run guesthouses, or adults-only all-inclusive resorts are all within reach.

# 4

Don’t skip a visit to Mouse Island.

Ancient sights and beaches aside, one of Corfu’s most iconic landmarks is the tiny and verdant Mouse Island: Pontikonisi, a tiny, very green isle named because of its mouse-like shape when viewed from above and located a short boat ride from the village of Kanoni. Visit the island’s 11th-century red-roof tiled Byzantine Chapel of Pantokrator with its frescos and wooden carvings inside. The surrounding waters provide a perfect backdrop for Instagrammable photographs. According to old legend, the island is actually the petrified ship of Odysseus, adding a mythical charm to this must-visit spot. The best way to visit Pontikonisi is by boat ride at sunset, and there are plenty of tour operators offering the excursion in the summer.

# 5

Experience the unique flavors of Corfu's gastronomy, where the cuisine is given a delicious twist.

Greek food is so much more than moussaka and feta cheese salads. In Corfu, the culinary scene is especially unique—and influenced by the island’s diverse history. Don't miss sofrito, a traditional Corfiot dish made of thin slices of veal cooked in white wine, garlic, and parsley sauce served with mashed potatoes or rice. Pastitsada is a Venetian-influenced beef or chicken dish cooked in a rich tomato and spice sauce, usually served with pasta. Fish lovers with enjoy bourdeto, a spicy fish stew made with the day’s fresh catch simmered in a tomato and red pepper sauce. Pair these dishes with local wine or a glass of kumquat liqueur, a sweet specialty made from the small citrus fruits native to the island. Greeks typically eat after 9 p.m., so join in this tradition and eat up a feast.
