The Fodor's Five
The five things you need to know before traveling to Frankfurt
Traveling on public transport is easy and affordable.
Frankfurt International is Germany’s largest airport, serving more than 70 million passengers a year. From there, it only takes 15 minutes by public transport to the main train station (Hauptbahnhof). Once you’re ready to explore the city, make use of the extensive network of trams, buses, U-Bahn (underground), and S-Bahn (suburban trains). Ticketing is easy with options for single, day, and group tickets, available via vending machines, mobile apps, or online. If you plan on covering a lot of attractions and big distances: The Frankfurt Card offers discounts on museums, tours, and restaurants while also providing free and unlimited use of the public transport system.
There’s more to the local cuisine than just those sausages.
While beer is the German quintessential drink, apple wine is Frankfurt’s beverage of choice. In fact, the Hessian apple wine culture--the wine is called Äbbelwoi or Ebbelwoi in the local dialect--is part of the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. This most popular of local drinks is traditionally paired with the legendary "Green Sauce," a herb-based condiment typically served with boiled potatoes and hard-boiled eggs, or the famous "Frankfurter Würstchen" (sausages), which usually come with mustard and bread. Head to one of the many apple wine taverns in the hip district of Sachsenhausen.
Culture is everywhere so dive straight into it.
An impressive museum landscape, countless galleries, a lively music scene, diverse theaters, and a rich literary tradition—take your pick from this wide cultural spectrum. The Museum Embankment (Museumsufer) features 26 museums including the Städel Museum, showcasing seven centuries of European masterpieces, and the Museum of Modern Art. The Alte Oper offers a varied program of operas, concerts, and ballets, while the Schauspiel Frankfurt is a leading venue for contemporary theater. Frankfurt also annually hosts the world's largest book fair.
From skyscrapers to parks, find your own space.
Frankfurt’s nickname is “Mainhattan,” a portmanteau of Manhattan and the river Main which flows through the city, as Germany’s fifth largest metropolis boasts the country’s most impressive skyline thanks to multinational corporations having their headquarters here. But among the towering skyscrapers and bustling activity, you’ll also find green oases hidden away. From the exotic botanical garden to the extensive city forest, the green spaces provide for relaxation or activity. Whether you're yearning for a run on your vacation or just love nature—in Frankfurt, you'll also find a breath of fresh air.
It’s so Instagrammable!
Frankfurt was completely rebuilt after the war. A walk to the historic town square Römerberg, through the old town and the new old town to the cathedral is particularly worthwhile. Of course, you also have to take pictures of the skyline from the Eisener Steg footbridge and walk past the Old Opera House. You can get a wonderful view over Frankfurt from the Main Tower, which is almost 657 feet high or from the highest floor of the Myzeil shopping center on Zeil Street. However, the best vantage point with a beautiful view over the whole city is from Frankfurt Cathedral.
