Car Rental Pricing, Hawaii & SE

Is $68 for a 24-hour rental ex Waikiki a good price? Spent some time on it but it’s the best I could find for January. There are much cheaper rentals from HNL but too much time/expense to get there and back.

For a March 8-day one way rental Charleston to Savannah the best I can do is $630 (Costco, any size car) and it seems pretty high. Tried AutoSlash and Expedia. Hoping for more like $350. There doesn’t seem to be a high one-way fee involved but the itemization of fees isn’t clear.

Looking for something or a vendor I missed.

It probably is pretty good for a Waikiki rental. We were there last month (a less popular time) and our cheapest airport rental with discounts was Thrifty at $41, plus a one way Uber off peak was $16 (30 minutes) and taking the bus back is $3 pp (takes about an hour with no traffic). One thing to factor in is that most if not all of the airport vendors have "skip the counter" but the city locations have limited hours and you can wait in line for longer than it takes to get to the airport!

Actually playing around with eliminating the one-way rental and looking at renting at either Savannah or Charleston only, the problem is South Carolina: they add over $200 in various fees to a weekly rental.

Thanks for the Honolulu advice. I picked midday flights in and out, otherwise would combine rental with arrival or departure.

Adding can fly into Myrtle Beach for less than Charleston, then the one way rental is $200 less from there to Savannah than a Charleston rental. Fees are still high at MB but not as high as Charleston airport.

It seems reasonable if it saves you the HNL hassle, but for Charleston to Savannah, try tweaking dates or checking smaller vendors for better rates.

There don’t seem to be smaller vendors. Was able to get $520 using Auto slash to find a Priceline rental at Budget so now a bit lower.

Kayak finds a great rate ($340) but it is via a Priceline knockoff I’ve never heard of, “Auto Rental 8.”

I often find Priceline to be one of the cheaper options, unless you can find one or more discount codes.
