If you plan to visit…..

July on track to be hottest month in P.E.I. history.

Link https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/princ...cord-1.6916133

It's been more than just hot on P.E.I. this month: It's been historically hot.

The current average temperature for the month of July counting through Sunday, including daytime highs and nighttime lows, has been 22 C.

That's 3.3 C above average according to Environment Canada, and a half-degree above the previous record set in July 1947.

tlc195, do you have any updates on the weather on PEI for August? We are leaving this Sunday for PEI. I've been checking weather reports. If they are accurate, (I know weather can change), looks like it will be cool most days. (In the 60's).

Karen,

I looked at , see below. But PEI weather changes often based on wind direction and where you are located. Take anything past 24 hours as a guess…lol. Enjoy your time on the island and do not eat too much lobster. It’s lobster season if you can cook where you are staying head down to any dock and buy the lobster from the lobstermen.

tlc195, Do you have a preference for New Glasgow Lobster Supper or Fishermen's Wharf Lobster Suppers?

We are leaving for PEI this Sunday, staying overnight in St. John, NB. We are spending two nights at the Johnson Shore Inn in Hermanville and then 4 nights at Barachois Inn in Rustico. So excited! And looking forward to some delicious seafood, especially lobster!

Thank you for the weather chart!

Karen,

Places we like to eat In the Cavendish/ North Rustico area.

Blue Mussel Cafe in North Rustico

Pedro’s in North Rustico

On the Dock in North Rustico

The Lost Anchor Cavendish

LaRoso Bistro Cavendish

New Glasgow Lobster Supper (if on PEI you got to go to a lobster supper, this is the place) in New Glasgow. We have been to New Glasgow at least 15 times, sometimes twice in 1 stay. Never had a bad meal. I understand Fisherman Wharf was sold over the winter with new owners. The have a large salad bar and you pick what you want. We did Fisherman about 10 years ago and like New Glasgow better.

PEI Island Preserve Company in New Glasgow

They make fantastic Preserves, Marmalades & Jellies. You can actually see them make it the various products. Do not miss the beautiful free “Gardens of Hope” adjacent to the store and restaurant to walk around. They have a restaurant OK food, good for breakfast.

Richards for fantastic lobster rolls in Cove Head and Victoria by the Sea and Cove head is in the National Park. Tell the toll takers you are going to Richards and they will let you pass without paying. If you do not go to Richards they will give you a ticket. You have to park in Richards parking lot.

If you go to Richards in Cove Head on the way visit Dunes Gallery they sell art, toys, and have free gardens outback. They also have a good restaurant.

Hope this helps, enjoy your time on the island.

If you have never been to the island and are trying to decide to visit please review the detailed trip report with amazing photos Karen Woo did on her trip to PEI, see link below. I think she really highlighted the beauty of the island in her photos and in her narrative.

Pretty Prince Edward Island and a Taste of New Brunswick

Thanks Karen for taking the time to post the details of your trip extremely helpful.

As this thread holds a lot of great information about PEI, I thought I would add a link to a bistro on the New Brunswick side of the Confederation Bridge. It is in Baie Vert, so well-placed for those who would like to have lunch before getting on the bridge to the island.

Bistro Le Chat Bleu

We have eaten there twice, most recently last Friday, on our way from Halifax to Stanley Bridge. Great service, an interesting menu, and an eclectic interior. Reservations recommended.

See link below for the artist line up. We have attended several concerts over the years and really enjoyed them. The facility is near Kensington.

After a record-breaking season in 2023 and over a quarter of a century presenting the very best of traditional, pop, classical, jazz, country, and world music in Historic St. Mary’s, Under the Spire (UTS) is excited to announce the full lineup for the upcoming 2024 season presented by Confederation Bridge. The upcoming season features the return of some fan favourite concerts and artists, new musicians, diverse genres spanning from celtic to classical, and incredible talent from all over Canada, including a new series highlighting PEI talent. P.E.I. weather app offers real-time readings from 60 locations

A researcher at UPEI has created a new web-based P.E.I. weather and climate app that gives real-time readings and historical information from across the Island.

"Currently on this app, we have about 60 weather stations showing — in real time — temperature, precipitation, wind speed and humidity," said Xander Wang, an assistant professor in the school of climate change and adaptation at UPEI.

"We also have historical data for climate, so that the people can go into this app to check the current weather conditions but also for the historical conditions."

We use the Confederation Bridge from New Brunswick to get to PEI. Below is some information on the bridge and a great view and trails Before crossing the bridge, definitely stop and check it out.

The Confederation Bridge is a box girder bridge carrying the Trans-Canada Highway across the Abegweit Passage of the Northumberland Strait, linking the province of Prince Edward Island with the mainlandprovince of New Brunswick. Opened May 31, 1997, the 12.9-kilometre (8.0 mi) bridge is Canada's longest bridge and the world's longest bridge over ice-covered water. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confederation_Bridge

Tolls apply only when leaving Prince Edward Island (when travelling westbound).

https://www.confederationbridge.com/

Before crossing the bridge on the New Brunswick side, stop at Cape Jourimain Nature Center for a great view of the bridge. You can drive or walk under the bridge the view is beautiful. The nature center has interesting displays and also walking trails. See map link.

When you are done crossing the bridge and the first stop is the visitor center. After visiting the visitor center go to Marine Rail Park for information on the bridge construction and another view of the bridge. Now it’s time to experience beautiful PEI!

Summerside Car Show

The car show is free and held on Friday night from 6:30 PM until 9:00 PM on Water St. in downtown Summerside, June 28-August 30, weather permitting. They had about 80-100 cars mainly from the 1950-80’s. Most cars were fully restored by local car enthusiasts. They also had a live band with many folks dancing in the street. It was a fun night definitely worth seeing if you like old cars, who doesn’t! Free parking in the various parking lots.

If you plan on taking the ferry this week or in the future definitely check with the ferry to see if they are operating.

Website https://www.ferries.ca/

The ferries have had a problem with mechanical problems, etc forcing the cancellation of the ferry or significant reduction in trips.

The Confederation Bridge is another option to get to the island. https://www.confederationbridge.com/

The most recent cancellation details

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/princ...r-24-1.7332061

Concerns about the reliability of the service have been growing this summer.

Crossings of the strait by Saaremaa have been regularly cancelled due to rough weather. The Saaremaa was built in Norway and is less suited for the often choppy waters of the Northumberland Strait.

Northumberland Ferries is leasing Saaremaa from Quebec as a replacement for the MV Holiday Island, which caught fire during a crossing in 2022 and had to be scrapped.

Finding yet another replacement remains a possibility, said Joyce.

"It's a tough market out there for used vessels, especially at short notice. It's certainly something we don't discount, but we don't anticipate Saaremaa being out for very long," he said.

Northumberland Ferries explains reasons behind frequent N.S.-P.E.I. ferry cancellations

P.E.I. MLA fears for future of Northumberland ferry service
Holiday Island was already due for replacement. A new ferry was announced in the 2019 federal budget, but at last report that ferry is still in the design stages. It is not due to be delivered until 2028.

In the meantime, the federal government purchased a ferry from Norway, the MV Fanafjord, to take the place of Saaremaa. That boat was originally planned to arrive this year, but it remains in Norway being retrofitted.

There are no plans currently to replace the 31-year-old Confederation.

PEI Cruise Ship Making Sure You Do NOT Miss your Boat to The Next Location

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/princ...hips-1.7338586

That ship has sailed

Earlier this month there was an unusual incident where two passengers did not get back to their boat on time, said Murphy.

"It doesn't happen very often, especially in Port Charlottetown," she said.

"[The ships] are very diligent on their timing and also very repetitive to let their passengers know what all aboard time is. On a cruise day you will often see on all our digital signage all aboard time, which is usually one hour prior to departure."

Passengers on excursions organized by the cruise lines are guaranteed that the boat won't leave without them, but passengers making their own arrangements have to take responsibility for getting back on their own, said Murphy.

Ships are on tight schedules to get to their next port of call, and captains have to keep in mind the often thousands of other passengers on board.

Missing the boat leaves a passenger with just two options: finding transportation to catch up with the boat on a later port of call, or returning home and making arrangements to have your luggage delivered, all at your own expense.

In this case, the next port of call was Cornerbrook, Nfld. Murphy said she didn't know what decision the stranded passengers made.

There's a new normal for weather in Charlottetown, and it's warmer!!

Environment and Climate Change Canada has updated its climate normals as measured at Charlottetown Airport, with the data showing the continuing impact of climate change.

The federal agency determines normal weather at any particular monitoring station using 30-year averages, and updates those normals every 10 years. Recently, it updated the baseline for normal weather at Charlottetown Airport from the span 1981-2010 to the span 1991-2020.

"It's warmer, and this is not surprising," said Environment and Climate Change Canada research scientist Megan Kirchmeier-Young.

"We have a pretty strong warming trend across all of Canada, across all regions of Canada. This warming is because of climate change, because of global temperature change increases… We are seeing the impacts of that all across Canada, including in Atlantic Canada and in P.E.I."
For the whole year, the average temperature at Charlottetown Airport is now 0.2 C higher than it used to be. While that doesn't seem like much, its impact can be seen at the extremes of Island weather.

Consider that in the database of new normals:

There are four more days a year where the temperature is expected to rise above 20 C, and four fewer days where it drops below –10 C. There are three more days a year where the humidex climbs over 30, and five fewer days a year where the wind chill reaches –20. There are 1.8 more days a year where the wind speed is expected to exceed 52 km/h, including a full extra day in December.

Much more details in the article in the link below.
