Hi, we will go to Mexico in decembre. Can anyone please tell if there are accomodation sites for Mexico other then abnb or booking?
Maybe even sites without all the misleading info?

Just returned from a month in Mexico where I used Booking.com and Expedia exclusively to book all of our accommodation , mostly mid-range hotels and one apartment. Very happy with my choices, in terms of both quality and price. I didn't find any "misleading information". All were booked on a fully refundable basis and paid either Ron arrival or upon departure.

I use booking.com & Airbnb almost exclusively when I don’t book directly. Two examples of their excellent customer service in Mexico:

1. Leaving a day early from a hotel in San Cristobal de las Casas the hotel wanted to charge me, booking.com gave me a refund.

2. A friend booked a casita in Oaxaca & Airbnb found her an alternative place the same day when the original didn’t meet expectations. I visited her at the new place which was a considerable upgrade from the original. They even negotiated with the owner to accept her dog.

These are only 2 of many reasons I use these sites. If you’ve had poor personal experiences then maybe you didn’t pursue remedies that I’m sure they’d have provided. If your reason is word of mouth or things you’ve read I’d encourage you to give them both a try yourself. I’ve had consistently good experiences with both sites for many years all over the world.

Where are you going in Mexico? What city or cities as you asking about.

I rent in Puerto Vallarta and have had nothing but postive experiences. I use established local rental agencies and/or property managers. I've never done an owner direct like VRBO or AirBnB (but would be willing to if I knew the specific building and unit in advance).

If you happen to be interested in Puerto Vallarta, post again and I'll list the agencies I've used. I've stayed in four different condo buildings or complexes, about a dozen different units over the past 10 years, all beautiful traditional Mexican places, No misleading anything. I do pay in full online before the trip. I stay from 2-4 weeks in the same place.

A tip if you do want to use AirBnB. Consider only units that have a lot of good reviews. I don't care if it's a "new property" supposed why no reviews. Look for Super hosts or at least how long has the host been with the same property listed on AirBnB. Compare the photos to what you know... for example when I see a place way up on the hillside with the ocean WAY off in the distance, and the description says "one block from the beach" well obviously that is a lie or at least a big exaggeration. Other things that listings may not show is about noise in the neighborhood (whether it's a nightclub in the city or barking dogs, roosters, donkeys, and kids screaming). Does the hot water work? If it is high on the hill is the street one taxis are willing to go up? Those details can help you sort out the gems from the... well not where you want to stay places.

No one who replied to your posts is advertising. They are all long time members of Fodors -- you are brand new so maybe are used to sites where people troll/advertise. This isn't that sort of website.

Are you talking about notices you received from AirBnB? How do you know they are "corrupt"?

You always have the option of booking a hotel directly on their website.

I find the Expedia group (Hotels.com) to be pretty reliable as far as disclosing total pricing.

You still haven't told us what has been misleading? If it's the low base pricing and you are not in the US you may have been misled by not initially seeing a total with all fees and taxes are included, but you should see that total before you book.

I recently had an issue with a Priceline booking. The Priceline subtotal for "taxes and fees" was not broken down between the two items. The hotel claimend Priceline's reservation said I had to pay the resort fee at the desk. When I got back home I called Priceline and found a live person, they put me on hold, spoke to the hotel to confirm all of the information and PL refunded me the resort fee charted by the hotel. (Thanks to the California Law, the resort fees have to be disclosed and included in total price). https://oag.ca.gov/hiddenfees

I find that Google Maps can be helpful as a means of obtaining information about Mexican hotels. It enables me to see exactly where particular hotels are located in a city or town and often additionally has reviews and price information concerning them. When looking at the reviews I first read thru the 'lowest' ones, recognizing that not every difficulty that bothers others would necessarily be a deal breaker for me. Also, I realize that negative reviews sometimes reflect customers' unrealistic expectations.

Rather than making reservations in advance, sometimes I just use my Google Maps research, done ahead of time at home, to make lists, in priority order, of establishments that I'll visit in person once I arrive there. Some small-town Mexican hotels, and lower cost ones in cities, neither accept credit cards nor reliably respect reservations that have been made in advance.

I make advance reservations though for special circumstances, such as wanting to stay in a particularly emblematic establishment, needing lodging during a special holiday time, or for the night after I have flown into Mexico and the night before will fly home.

Sometimes hotels accept reservations through their own web sites. When possible, I prefer to reserve that way, dealing directly with the hotels rather than thru third party intermediaries.

Suze -- I'm pretty sure the OP is complaining about a couple of responses that mentioned using airbnb and/or Booking. She thinks because something positive was posted they must be shills Little_Doll obviously has a personal problem with those sites.

The answer is YES there are many ways to book a place to stay in Mexico that are neither AirBnB or Booking. There are hundreds of rental websites, local property managers, real estate agents, hotel websites, etc. but as I asked earlier, we'd need to know where in Mexico she wants to go to start naming them. It's a fairly large country.
