Salt Cay

Island
Coast with rocks and blue sky on Salt Cay, a Turks and Caicos island
ABOUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Fewer than 100 people live on this 2½-square-mile (6-square-km) dot of land, their unassuming lifestyle set against a backdrop of whitewashed cottages, stone ruins, and weathered wooden windmills standing sentry in the abandoned salinas. Bordered by beaches where weathered green and blue sea glass and pretty shells often wash ashore, Salt Cay lives up to its reference as "the island that time forgot." Beneath the waves, 10 dive sites are minutes from the shore, while humpback whales pass by on their way south to their breeding grounds from January through March.
